Global Engagement and Outreach (GEO) possesses a diverse set of analytical, management, technical, creative, cultural, and linguistic skills. In this installment of GEOtag, we sit down with Marko Sijan, one of our GEO Event Coordinators supporting the Civil Military Emergency Preparedness (CMEP) Program.
Tell us a bit about yourself, how did you come to join the team?
I'm originally from Zagreb, Croatia. I attended university there, receiving a B.Sc. in engineering from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture. Following a few small jobs after graduation, I started work at the Ministry of Defense in the Main Informatics Center. In 2002, I received an invitation to join the team and work with the Partnership for Peace Information Management System (PIMS) Program. I worked as an In Country Coordinator (ICC) for Croatia from late 2002 until 2009 when Croatia joined NATO and PIMS was officially closed in country. I then transitioned to an assignment as an Event Coordinator.
What sort of events does the CMEP program encompass?
The program brings together planners from Partnership for Peace (PfP) member nations to develop projects aimed at improving disaster response planning. Delegates come from government agencies, emergency services, and military organizations. Activities include presentations from attendees, planning discussions, and meetings between national delegations and U.S. planners.
